Hobbyists - Mako - 10-12-2008

This has probably been asked before, but I'm curious...

Besides the primitive/survival skills, what kind of hobbies do you undertake? It seems like many Hoodlums have other hobbies too.

I am especially interesting in exotic or unusual ones (Should I word that differently? Probably.). I am thinking about getting into Bonsai Tree growing and Bronze Working!

EDIT: Please post pictures of your work!

I make sci-fi and horror props and costumes, am very involved with music (writing, performing, recording, engineering, etc), all kinds of "crafty" things like painting, drawing, sewing, sculpting, etc...

Are girls considered a hobby? <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Hobbyists - khiori@hotmail.com - 10-12-2008

Fun! Thanks for starting this one Mako, I'm looking forward to see what others post!

I am learning pyography and usually work on wooden bowls, boxes and weapon handles/stocks. I am currently working on a small 'fire box' with dragons crawling all around it and a 'story box'--one with the different scenes from the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. Soon I will be putting some sort of Scottish design on the CS Scottish Dirk (I have the wood handled first version without the carving of the second model).

I want to learn Illumination to go with my calligraphy.

When my hands won't cooperate with this stuff, I like to write--nothing exciting, just fan fic for play.

Woodworking of various sorts. Wooden boat building in particular.

Knife making

Leatherworking

Hobby gunsmithing

Learning to weld

About to have a home foundry set up. (if I can get home long enough to finish the project)(the bug bit hard while with Ron in Romania)

Learning to juggle ( 3 ball and devil stick )

Sorry Mako, nothing exotic. I'm as plain as white bread.

I must admit that I've always been thrown by the word "hobby". I'm not certain what it's supposed to be.

Creative expression?

Time burner?

There are things that I do like to spend time doing, that give me personal reward and have a purpose and value behind them...

1. Loving my family

2. Exploring the wild places

3. Hunting

4. Outdoor photography

5. Combat arts

6. Watching people (free entertainment and education!)

7. Daydreaming about and planning for my next Survival Training Exercise

Kurt.

MB, that was too cool...

I used to collect all kinds of old militaria... not so much anymore. With our house/home, my hobbies have pretty much ceased. I call my preparedness training and equipment hunting my "hobby" to excuse and diffuse family and friends who just don't get it. I love to read and when my gF is up to it, we kiyak in the Tampa Bay, and local rivers, Little Manatee, Upper Manattee and Braden so far...

I still have a small collection of firearms, mostly older stuff, and while I don't shoot as much as I used to, I still check them over once in a while and still get the jitters when I drive past a range... <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':bash:' />

I also have a few antigue bayonettes left... GF balked on my desire to mount them and hang that behind my chair in the dining room... <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Oh well... So too, as an Urban Hoodlum, I guess a hobby is planning and wishing to get to a Dirt Time or just live vicariously through the rest of you! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Little bit of photography, mostly outdoor, scenic stuff.

Rifle and pistol shooting.

Reloading pistol and rifle bullets. (Just started this hobby because of the last hobby).

Limited furniture making.

A little bit of web design.

Nothing too far out or exotic here.

I uploaded some of my pictures in the Hoodlums Photo Forum, here ---> Fox1's Pictures

Hobbyists - Kailyst - 10-12-2008

Well.....um.......

I USED to work in Stained Glass. Lamps, panels, night lights, stepping stones and such. Sold my equipment last year to fund my move out of SC. Besides, I had no room to work. NOTE: Do NOT ATTEMPT to work in glass if you have carpet!!! Glass doesn't vacuum very well!! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry2:' />

I still paint when I have time to enjoy the work in progress. I've gotten LOTS of inspiration from Hoodlum pictures!!!!

Cooking is sort of a hobby as I try to find new recipes for basic prep items. I'm hoping to make a cookbook one day, unfortunately, "Apocalypse Chow" has already been used as a title by someone else, so I may have to go with "TEOTWAWKI Cooking" or "Good Eats When TSHTF". <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Reading is a favorite way for me to relax, as well as music and dancing. Gotta get back into the Ballroom Dance lessons this winter!! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Dirt Time is ALWAYS fun!!!

Hobbyists - raemsbrian - 10-12-2008

No real hobbies...collecting ex wives maybe...

I tried to bonsai pets, but too noisy and no real good results. I like to make medical kits, drop away into the wild for a few days, pretty well a boring individual I guess. I have been known to dabble in writing, and in resurrecting old medical procedures.
