Converting A Savage Mark 2 From 22Lr To 22Mag
#1
Have picked up a savage mark 2 boltaction in 22lr with missing magazine for $ 40. Have a 22 mag reamer.. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Was thinking to make a single shot 22 mag out of it. The boltface of the savage fits a 22 mag rim and the action is big enough.... i was thinking to make an adaper block for easy loading and close the bottom of the magazine well ( don't like the mag spring and extended mag in the first place). Now I have heard mixed things about a 22lr barrel for 22 mag. Some say it improves accuracy and some rebarrel their 22 mag with 22 lr barrels, others say the 0.002 are to much and you get to much pressure, others claim a 22 lr barrel can't withstand a jacketed bullet from the 22 mag.....

Anybody out there rechambered a 22lr to 22 mag ( not rebarreled)?

The 22 WMR shoots a different diameter bullet than the 22 LR. .224" vs .223"

All of the handguns with interchangable cylinders to allow shooting both 22WMR and 22LR are barreled for the magnum not the LR.

It is safe to shoot the smaller .223" LR bullets in a .224" bore. I'm not sure it would be safe to try to squeeze the larger bullet down a tighter bore.

My 2 Cents

I have rechambered 2 lr guns to 22mag - a ruger bearcat, and a marlin singleshot. Both worked well and are very accurate. They work for me,Do the rechamber at your own risk , make shure the gun is in good mechanal shape and check your headspace carefully , rim thickness is different between the 2.
