4X4 Van / New Conversion

A friend of mine had a Ford E-350 extended 4x4 van that a tv station used. Had the box for a gen, all sorts of wiring for lights and everything imaginable. The 460 motivated the van along pretty good, plenty of power to tow and lug a full load. I drove it for a while, the gas mileage kind of sucked but I always do drive with a heavy foot. Gas mileage was probably around 12-14mpg, I forget so don't quote me on that.



Some of the converted vans are extremely expensive. Of course if you have the skills for wood work, etc you can save yourself a lot of dough.



Its not the ultimate off road vehicle, if that is what you are after you'd probably be better off with a small rig like a Jeep, FJ40 or standard cab pickup. Then attach a trailer for additional gear and a RTT. If you aren't planning on rock climbing or having issues with width and height, and want versatility, a van might be a great option. One great advantage of a van is you do not have to exit the vehicle to access the rear, which can keep you dry and warm (or cool), keep your stash out of sight and secure and if the need arises you can bail out quickly without having to fold up, hook up, etc things you'd have to do with a trailer or other options.

Lots of good stuff in this thread.



FWIW. In some states you can register your van as a Motorhome if it has a toilet, a bed and water. That's easy to do with portable sink and pump setups and a porta potty. When it is registered as a motorhome it may enjoy the protections a real home has from search and seizure. Furthermore if you have unopened bottles of booze in the cooler in the back and it's out of the reach of the driver, it's legal. Here in Idaho it doesn't matter as the passenger can drink a beer as you tool on down the road. Open container is not a big deal unless you have an accident and have booze in ya and then it is the end of life as you know it.



I never considered the van as the ultimate... my feet or a good horse are the ultimate. Even a good 4 wheeler or bike are much better than the best real vehicle. However it is the most flexible vehicle I've owned. It gets through heavy show that would drown a jeep, it can haul a neighbor out of a ditch far better than a CJ or other vehicle of that size. When ya get done drilling a tunnel in the snow you can park, step in back, brew up some hot cocoa and add a nip of JB or something nice, kick back, check email or watch a movie and then when rested... head out to rescue some more idiots.

Ron, good info to know about passenger vehicle vs RV.



My gramp had a Coachmen (Dodge? van look-a-like), early 80's I think. I wonder if they were ever available with 4x4. No problem towing a boat or snowmobile, decent sleeping quarters, shitter, sink, stove. Personally I'd renovate the shitter room into a bathroom.



It might be worth considering modifying a rig like that to 4x4, depending on how the framework is set up, if you are handy with a wrench and welder. They can be bought for a few grand.

[size="3"]That’s a lot of van info. I can see how the weight being evenly distributed over the front and back wheels can make a big difference. I think that if I were to do it that the diesel engine is the best choice for the amount of miles unless I were living where there is salt in the climate to rust the body out. I suppose it would just have to be a cost that I would have to gut once every 5 to 8 yrs. I’m not sure though, I haven’t lived around the ocean or salty roads in that situation. Do you think that used is the best way to get them then? I recently searched under Quigley 4x4 on ebay:

2006 with 67,759 miles when I looked it was around $15k. I’m not sure how to judge mileage on American automotive stuff but it seems that if I didn’t want to spend the $43k new that it may be better to buy from a state were the rust is low and plan on replacing some of the drive componentents.



I don’t know why I feel compelled to correct myself about those bolt specs, but I was going off of memory. AN=Air Force, Navy standards and NAS =National Aerospace standards. I’ll try to keep things straight next time.

On the average every day driven car (daily driver) the mileage is around 12-15k miles, or roughly 19-24k km. On specialty vehicles that mileage preferably should be lower, such as 4x4 because there are more components prone to wear and tear.



Generally you will find vehicles towards the southwest in better shape than any place near the ocean (salt water), where it rains a lot or where they use salt. Of course there are plenty of vehicles in "bad" areas that are either maintained under a magnifying glass or kept off the road, covered, etc that are in excellent condition. The killer of vehicles out west (think Arizona, New Mexico, etc) is the sun and heat... dry rot. Rubber hoses, tires, wiring, etc can become damaged. Corrosion is very minimal compared to the North East or the coast line in Texas.



In regards to diesel vs gasoline... its debatable. In general I believe most rigs you'll run into off road will be gasoline powered, so if you happen to run out of fuel it'll be more difficult to locate diesel. But if you are around farms and other locations that tend to have a good supply of diesel, that is a good way to go.

I'm pining for the 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter van meself these days.



I wish they had them available in the shorter wheelbase here in NA.

Cool, Cessna Caravans on floats, can detract wheels in water, and pull up the boat dock,then back in. MD500s' can be equipped with nitrogen floats, or titanium skid shieldsSmile
