I Am Going To Be A Bowyer
#1
Hi all....I suppose it was just a matter of time (seeing I like flint knapping) before I got bit by the bow making bug <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/>

I'd like to thank our 90 North for planting and feeding and watering the seed....and our Archer for helping to turn that seed into a skill tree.

Just finished making my tillering stick, bow string jig and homemade bow string wax....bought some hand tools ( a rasp, files and a scraper) waiting on delivery of my string material and then to find the perfect piece of wood...then we'll see what type of bow I can produce with these two hands.

My mom asked if I wanted her to buy me a bow for my birthday- I said nope mom. <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/> .....I guess she just doesn't understand the making is the important thing.

Originally I wanted to make primitive bows but I am not that advanced in woodworking (or anything) yet...so I am going to opt to start with a non primitive bow and work my way to primitive. However this is half primitive as I have used no power tools. You want a workout....try sawing all the notches on a tillering stick by hand....whew!!!!!!!!!!

My workshop is my living room....I wanted my boyfriend to cut off the extra piece on my jig with his battery powered saw, but it didn't have enough balls! He insisted we wait until the weekend and go to a friends to use the table saw….I laughed and started batoning it with the Mero Mero chopper…he said I’d ruin it and chop it too deep….hee heee I love it when I am right. I am getting handy with that chopper, I hacked that thing down to perfect size…no electricity required.

I included a nice sweaty self-ie with the "kill 'em all" flag in the kitchen....man I tell ya, after sawing that tillering tree...my triceps hurt for a day or two!

Thanks for looking

AOC

Good luck on a lifelong condition, I mean study!

Been thinking the same thing myself, but in a wilderness setting.
Message of Insight and Unity

We go into the wilderness to fulfill our hearts and empty our minds of life's garbage.
The gear we leave behind and the challenges we encounter,
Are methods we use to cleanse our spirits.
Of Survivalists and Bushcrafters, Primitive Technologists too, we are one.........

It is the wilderness within, we strive for first and always.
Not everyone can have a cabin in the mountains.
The thread that connects us, is fine like silk and strong as steel.
Together, the song of the wilderness is the song we sing!

"And can I say something else?"
Bushcrafting is "doing what you want to do."
Survival is "doing what you have to do"
Primitive Technology is about all of the above........

Thanks you guys!! I am so blessed to have great mentors & friends. And Curtis makes for a great teacher, patient as a saint. I for sure have the archery bug, I have all of those symptoms and I ain't even made the bow yet...I think about exactly how I am going to do it...almost every day; from the obsidian point I'll knapp to the cattail stalks I am going to use for arrows. Feathers or birch for fletching, I've been collecting it all.

Ronnie- I think you were the first one to tell me the Hoodlum mantra of always teaching and learning... and you also bestowed upon me my first yucca drill stick.... <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Your recent post made me jones to go out and practice the fire bow--- real bad. Best believe, not IF BUT when I finally get that elusive friction fire, you'll be partly responsible for my success.....

I guess that's the key to mastering any skill you want to have---never give up on it, always try and keep trying.

Christine, you still need a hunting license to kill bears with an obsidian knife <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

One way to start making self bows,is a board bow. You won't have much money in it,so if you mess up,no great loss. But you will learn a lot in the doing. http://www.primitiveways.com/board%20bow.html

AOC, we know you have many mentors, friends and such here. However, its "your" work, "your" dedication," your" heart, that is responsible for "your" progress and successes! In other words, "Its all about you baby!"<img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/>

And we are loving it just as much or more than you!<img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />/>
