Keep up the great work! It has been fun on this end watching the evolution of your making your first bow! I don't know which I'm enjoying more...watching the evolution of your bow coming into being and sensing your excitement and anticipation when you talk to Curtis for further instruction, questions, check up on how your progress is, pictures, etc..., or his pride in watching someone truly fall in love with making a self wood bow, and take it so seriously and be doing so well. He seems like a proud father every time he gets update pictures on your progress and sees the excitement in your eyes. You are doing such a fantastic job, and taking in every bit of instruction. You read and research every article, study the pictures, and ask very intelligent well thought out questions. You are a "true student" that truly wants to make a bow and learn everything they can about the process... not just think it is cool to have a bow and brag about it but not put in the time and effort necessary to truly achieve their goal and understand what they are doing and why. Keep it up!

Can't wait to see pics of you shooting that bow you made...from a dirty ol' piece of wood into a fine piece of hunting/shooting equipment with your 2 hands, time, labor, and love!!

Oh JoAnna, you are one of the sweetest people! I thank you both for the encouragement, for your time, guidance and friendship. A couple of months ago I had never even heard the word TILLERING before...it sounded like a cool new dance or something, but I am learning more and I feel confident! I am becoming a real Jr. bowyer, using the hand tools, feeling, hearing, seeing the wood grain. I am already practicing instinctive shooting styles and practicing my shooting technique, I will have those pictures up for you the minute I can shoot it. One thing bow building has taught me is patience...I think by the end, I'll have spent more hours studying it on the tree than taking material off.

Every day I thank my lucky stars that Curtis chose to pass on his exceptional art and superb skill set on, to me. Of course it takes a lifetime of practice to get as good as he is, but I have the best instructor and I never give up....One day, I'll pass my skills on to someone else who deserves it. If someone told me a year ago, that I would be making a long bow; I wouldn't have ever believed it....and currently I feel so connected to it, I will probably make bows and flintknapp from now until the day that I die...

Next up arrow making! <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

well it was Friday night and I was finally, finally ready for the shooting phase...I even sawed into my knuckle trying hastily to cut in my arrow rest using one hand holding the bow and one hand trying to operate the two handed hack saw <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/geek.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geek:' />/>/>/>/>/>/>/>
.jpg   DSCF7950.JPG (Size: 73.71 KB / Downloads: 6)

I band-aided it and finished sawing-- no time to waste if I wanted to test shoot my bow after work the very next night. It is an awful desperate feeling spending 3 months building your bow - just to have it be all ready, the moment of truth and no place to shoot it!
.jpg   DSCF7943.JPG (Size: 91.37 KB / Downloads: 8)

we usually go visit our friends on the weekend and they have property out in the sticks.. my timing had to be perfect! Finish tonight or else--wait until next Saturday to go shoot it! No way Jose <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/>/>/>/>/>/>/> I email Archer to mention to him, that I literally cannot wait and am getting ideas to try to shoot it in the basement!! 5 minutes later I am shooting at the cardboard boxes in my basement!

.jpg   DSCF7940.JPG (Size: 104.72 KB / Downloads: 8)

.jpg   DSCF7920.JPG (Size: 72.64 KB / Downloads: 5)

After 3 practice shots I know it shoots good, but the basement is really too cramped for longbow shooting and I knew it was unsafe...furnace, water heater, central air, cable box, plumbing ect ... I calmed down and went to sleep, dreaming of shooting my bow some more.

work that day was a killer, torturous, staring at the clock, every 5 minutes C'MON...is it 6:00 yet????- a countdown to the ride out to the country, usually I like going out there for the fresh air, good food and friendly faces.... but tonight was different...it was the freedom and wide open spaces I was after...

we stopped at the liquor store, grocery store and upon arrival... I took one big shot of whiskey for courage

.jpg   DSCN5217.JPG (Size: 96.92 KB / Downloads: 6)

.jpg   DSCN5223.JPG (Size: 62.22 KB / Downloads: 11)

then I promptly handed off the food to the other girls and said, "here, you heat this up....I'll be out in the back"...Joe and Aaron came out to video me and take a few shots ( <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />/>/>/>/>/>/>/> of the bow and the bottle), I shot about 40 arrows through it, at distances of 20, 30 and 40 feet from our target (old frozen flyers)...it was bitterly cold but I was out there shooting until I couldn't feel my fingers or face anymore and lovin every minute of it...

.jpg   DSCF7932.JPG (Size: 93.66 KB / Downloads: 28)

I was out there until 3 am long after my camera men got cold, went inside to eat and warm up -- good times <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/>/>/>/>/>/>/> ! I shot the fletching right off the one I did, my buddy Aaron got "quilled" in the hand, I bent a field tip and my buddy Jay was shooting his brand new crossbow with laser sights and our shots were on par at that range <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />/>/>/>/>/>/>/>

sorry the videos are dark and grainy...I'll get a better one next time!

This by far is the best photo full draw look at the nice tiller on that killin' stick. You done an outstanding job on your first bow! But you understand now that you have been bitten by the archery bug there is no cure. You are destined to many wonderful hours of bending the bow, the fabulous arch of the arrow and a lifetime of enjoying the king of sports.

It is a breeze and a pleasure to shoot, light and smooth, I could hold it there for hours. I took to stashing my spare arrows in my boot <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> ...I've really got to get on making a quiver.

Yes, I understand that there ain't no goin' back from it now--it is my new religion, there is no cure, it is highly contagious and it is all yer fault! <img src='http://hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I couldn't have done it without you my friend!

Theo
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

And you'd be hard pressed to find someone in my group of friends who hasn't had a little frostbite (on some part, at some time) and the affected part is just never quite the same in cold weather again....me it is my little finger, left hand.
