What'd Ya Do This Week?
#1
This week I added the following to the larder:

- 20# sack o' flour

- 25# sack o' sugar

- 4# salt

- 2 big jars o' peanut butter (GOTTA have it!)

- case canned tomatoes

Sterilized five, 5-gallon plastic paint buckets and lids for bulk storage. Those'll get filled tonight. Started assembling my vehicle tool/safety kit for the Jeep.
"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee. And the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee. Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee, and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

With the girlfriend recently laid off and all the talk of recession we are taking things slowly. I'm trying to add things to out food stores and finding cheaper ways to eat (currently reading Eat Well for .99 A Meal book).

I have several windup and/or shortwave radios and want to find an affordable padded case that I can store most of them in, so I got to lay them all out and measure the space they will take up.

Been sorting through gear and posting a lot of stuff for sale that are just not part of my current plans.

Hi OC,

I took the cheap pouch/satchel bag that came with my wind-up and I lined it with closed-cell foam from an old sleeping pad. Radio goes in ziplock, ziplock goes in the foam, foam goes in the bag. Don't know if that would work for you but there it is.

Good idea Yeoman, do you have the Grundig model? I have two different ones plus smaller ones. I'll likely try to pack one of the Grundigs and then the other small ones, but leaving out the really cheap and basic AM/FM radios.

And you helped out a brother Hoodlum with some good advice.

Thanks again!

Forgive me if this is a stupid Question, but what is meant by 'Copy Canning'?

Thanks. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blush' />

Hey Jeff!

Ron and Karen talk about copycanning in their UrbanMaster Volume 1. I heartily recommend the UrbanMaster DVDs if you're preparing your home as your "bugin centre".

Copycanning is pretty simple. Take stock of what you normally purchase for groceries (or other household supplies, like soap, TP, etc.) and next time you go buy 'em, get 1 or 2 extra. Stock 'em securely in your pantry/storage room. When you use a can, note it on your grocery/supplies list and then go buy 2 extra next time.

The principle is that you rotate your stocks (by using them) and gradually increase your stocks (supplies) as time goes by. In this way you can prepare your home without undue shock to your financial situation.

That's the basics, but there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind:

1. Buy only what you know you'll eat or otherwise use. Less shock to the GI tract when you use 'em.

2. Rotate your stock. Don't let stuff expire. This means labelling and keeping track of your stocks.

3. Take advantage of caselot sales.

4. Go through your house and list what you use (to ensure you don't forget some small-but-critical item!)

I'm sure a bunch of Hoodlums will chime in here to teach much more...!

HTH!

Bought more food for the larder.

Cleaned out my closet and kept only USEFUL clothing.

Made 2 more snoods.

Tried to watch my primitive bow DVD, but in the middle of it took a break, at which point Joe (trying to help) took it out of the DVD player, put it in the Netflix envelope w/o looking first, and mailed it off to Netflix. They can't find it and I was mad as a wet hen. He's gonna replace it. DANG!
