Surviving In A Socialist Society
As this country leans more toward a socialist society I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on surviving in that type of environment.

First and foremost, I am concerned about ammo and forearms. With a limited budget I am trying to accumulate, what I think, is proper for the long term? I believe that reloading equipment will become invaluable in a socialist society and each component, primers, brass/casings, powder and lead almost invaluable.

The taxation of fuel is another concern (ala Britain). Taxation to limit usage for the common good if you will.

There are a ton of other concerns for me but what are your thoughts? What must we do in that situation to prosper?
If you are 100 miles within the border get ready for..."Papers, your papers please!"

And...How much do you make...Oh...that much...please make the check out to Socialist US...Oh you poor folks here is some money we just happen to have...

You may know the answer to that one soon enuff, bro.

As for what to do about it ...

Take a look at how Canada works...we keep getting called socialist. We are definitely not communist, but everyone claims we are a socialist state! Semantics, pure semantics.

We have a right wing government, too.

I think fear mongering is worse than preparing...and I have seen a lot of fearmongering here lately...relax, if Obama gets in it is because the masses wanted what they thought he was. I am pretty sure a lot of the drumbangers will calm down once the election is over, and they realize he is nothing more than any other weak president.

I've got the food thing half done.

But the more I think about this the more I feel unprepared. I never thought this country would become socialist in any meaningful way.

As this country leans more towards that I believe the ability to become self sufficient is even more important.

I live in the suburbs and am at risk to every whim of this type of government.
If it gets as bad as my fear mongering brain is predicting. I have every inclination to sell my business at the prearranged price, to a company I broker for (while bending over and gritting my teeth for the taxes that will bring) then getting a 9-5 job as a ranger, or something. Something that I could do for fun, while making little enough money that I would not be contributing to anyone else, but rather taking a contribution. On the side I will secretly be building an empire so that when the people of the US figure out how stupid they are, I will be poised to take advantage of their stupidity and the almost guaranteed "depression" it will bring.
official westside jealous...and afraid.

You talked of accumulating some wealth.

Thinking about this last night I thought, just maybe, having things of realitive wealth such as ammo, gold, fuel, etc., could be the thing to do.

Becoming more involved with bartering (which could evolve into something other <img src='<#EMO_DIR#>/wink3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wink3:' /> ) could be a hedge to socialism.
"Owning" a home could become interesting.

In an off beat place.

Away from the safety of the government.
Hey Y'all!

I think researching existing and past socialist states would help here.

Canada does have a right wing government, but individual provinces have experimented with socialist governments (google the New Democratic Party in Canada and read up on what they believe in).

While living under successive NDP governments in British Columbia, I saw the following:

Restricted individual freedom (through regulation)

Higher taxes to pay for their social programs

Fiscal mismanagement

Deficit spending for more debt

Nanny state thinking at policymaking levels

Socialism is bad, Communism is worse.

Ask anyone from the Eastern/Communist Bloc countries.

Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

AMEN, Brother!
And afore any buddy gets their tighty whiteys in a bunch.....we ain't there yet.....and look at American only need to go back as far as FDR and then come forward to see how socialist programs and such have been developed in this country.

BrianP makes a good point......the Annointed One, (PBUH), will probably turn out to be just another weak prez, and if the Demoncrats get their groove on in Congress, there is always the dreaded backlash from the voters...ala Jimminy Carter......

Howsomever...the Repubs have lost their way and need to do some soul-searching .....

Also, keep this in here is operating in a vacuum....think about it.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Easy man,

If you see it coming, and know it's not avoidable, then it's foolish to not figure out how to make the most of the situation. If ol' Barry wins, people who make over $250K a year will get higher taxes. Find ways to put your money in tax deferred investments, start a small business to soak up all your extra, and build the EQUITY IN THE BUSINESS until more favorable times, then sell the damn thing if you feel so inclined.

A DBA and a large inventory of TOPS knives would be one easy place to start, as a biz you get taxed on profits. Investing in your business and growing it can keep the profits relatively small, while the value of the business grows. Sooner or later you'll have to pay the piper, but you're betting that later the piper will want less from you.

People making less than that $250K mark, will get tax relief, etc. Use that extra money to prep! Add storage to your home, increase the amount of supplies you have on hand, go to college and learn to be a medic, DO SOMETHING with the extra while it's being offered! There's two basic outcomes that you should look at: 1.) Barry doesn't do too bad, eventually, Republicans get back in control, things go back to 'normal' and you lose the extra tax breaks OR 2.) Things go really south, and you'll need the stuff you stashed while you could.

Doesn't matter what happens to the country, your neighbors, the state of ______________. Focus on yourself and your family, and don't let yourself get caught up in the damn circus that is politics in this age. It's a waste of time and energy that you could be putting to better use.

Absolutely. Maybe the best thing for our country would be to temporarily suffer through four years of Obama / Biden / Pelosi / Reid. At the end of that period MAYBE both parties would find some balance in their out-of-whack philosophies and get back to serving the people vs just serving them up! I think the voters of this country, especially the chronic "undecideds," need a kick in the crotch too. People need to get back to voting on issues and character, NOT on who's the PC pick, the MTV-viewership's choice or the slickest speaking. A slap in the face from having bought some swamp land real estate from this charlatan might do them some good.
