The Long Awaited Tarp Post!
#61
Got mine done. Big enough for two very comfortably, 3 a little close (but still more room than a 3 person tent) used 7.5 yds (ordered 7 but received extra) x 60" of material. I only reinforced the two main and 4 side wall loops. Since mine was not as long I only placed one side bottom loop in the middle of each side. I have never sewn before and because I didn't really have the sewing machine figured out until I was almost done, it took me a couple days to make. The next one will be done much faster (hopefully in multicam).

Thanks for the great instructions Muddyboots!

30+ years ago my wife and I made a Whelan lean to as described in one of his books out of ripstop nylon. Worked well. I wonder if I can persuade her to work on this as well. Hmm.

Just wanted to bump this thread...it's a good one!! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I'm going to try tackling this project using Muddy's instructions. I will slightly modify it to have the final dimensions to be 10 foot by 12 foot.

I got my fabric here... DIY Tactical . 1.9 oz. ripstop nylon, ACU camo pattern with waterproof "blackout" coating. Seems like a decent price, too.

Any other pointers for a beginner, Muddyboots?

I am not muddy but i can give some pointers. First, measure twice, recheck and then cut. Practice on some scrap so that you can set the tension on the thread and bobbin and get the stitch length right before you start. Don't get in a hurry, that is when you really make the BIG mistakes. Read and follow Muddys directions. Use your tarp regularly!

I'm going to add this note:

When you set one of these tarps up, there is the main rig point on each end and the beak point (also on each end.) Hang the beast from the MAIN POINTS! That is where the tension should be!!! The beak point shouldn't take nearly the load that is on the main. Trust me, you will be happier this way.
