Survivorman
#1
Has anyone seen the TV show Survivorman show on the Discovery Science channel? Kinda phony, he never has to try more than once to start a fire with a bow and he always leaves the site of his crash or break down to walk out to safety never having a compass or using the stars or sun as a direction finder. I don't know, it seems he's making it look like a survival situation is nothing more than a unexpected camping trip. A better idea would be to pay Ron & Karen to air the Woodsmaster & Cave Cooking episodes. Their ratings would be better and they would actually be conveying some good information! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cursing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cursing:' />

I've had my eye on this guy for sometime as well. He may claim to be a survival expert, but remember he does have someone else edit his stuff for time and content. Ron has the "freedom" to edit his own work. So he's allowed to show the details. I think mainstream America dont want the details. Theres a pretty disclaimer in the beginning ,blah, blah. Just by watching you can tell he's not a "professional" or "expert" survivalist, but I think he is competant and very entertaining. Maybe he got a break or knew sombody who knew somebody. Point is he's on mainstream T.V. being aired to mainstream America. What can you really expect ? Its better than Survivor. Not as good as Wanted: Ted or Alive ,and cannot compete with Hoodswoods Video productions(no one can). ANYTHING on cable t.v. should be taken for what it is. A rating point. For what it is, "SurvivorMan" is better than average progamming. I enjoy watching it, critcising it, and learning from it.

True enough it's a hell of a lot better than suvivor, and it's not near as entertaining as Wanted Ted or Alive <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> but there is just something about the dude that chaps my ass.

Maybe its cause he got paid to go camping an you did not! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cursing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':cursing:' />

I enjoy the show and watch every Friday night. I think its important to realize they're taking 7 days and compressing into a one hour tv show.

I don't think the purpose of the show is to teach survival skills like Ron's videos. Its just entertainment.

I found the below info about how Les Stroud and his wife lived for a year in the Canadian Wilderness on his website.

Snowshoes and Solitudeâ„¢

In the spring of 1994, Les Stroud and Sue Jamison bade farewell to modern society and followed their hearts north into the remote reaches of the Canadian wilderness. Leaving home, family and jobs behind, they would spend the next year living closer to the land than most of us could ever imagine. And they did it without the luxury of a single modern convenience.

Traveling by canoe and in the winter by snowshoe, Les and Sue were attempting to replicate life in North America some 500 years ago, before Europeans first set foot on the continent. They created fire without matches. They built a shelter with a stone axe. They survived on what the bush provided. In doing so they realized the true meaning of living wild, and how closely life and death coexist when you're many miles from human contact.

Snowshoes and Solitude is the incredible story of Les and Sue's year in the Wabakimi wilderness. It chronicles the struggles and triumphs of their daily lives, and their burning love and respect for the natural world.

Snowshoes and Solitude is one of the great wilderness adventures of our time.

First off.. Thanks for the vote of confidence! My hat don't fit now.

I've only watched it a couple of times. My biggest criticism was when they claim he is alone and the shots are clearly two or three camera shots taken from a perspective and with a quality he could not set up and still have time to do that he does. A good example was his survival at sea where he floats for five days, spends one night tied to the chase boat (hmmm) and then finds an island where he just hangs out. Other than that stuff which is purely technical, I sorta like it. I know there is a crew shadowing him.

In the episodes I watched I sorta thought he whined a bit too much and made stuff sound way too melodramatic but hell, that's how they sold the series.

When we made the pilot for "Ultimate survival" last summer I had a chance to really get into the heads of the directors and producers and learned a lot about my own misunderstandings. The Discovery channel is no longer about discovery, it's about adventure. Teaching has gone by the wayside and if it happens, cool. There just isn't a market for education and their demographics prove it.

I figure that soon enough Karen and I will take a shot at PBS and for that we'll need some support and fan noise. If we can get that we'll put on a Woodsmaster - Cave Cooking series. Sure the money is no where near as good but then we are into education and entertainment happens. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

I have a feeling that someone out there likes us too. In the recent Mythbusters episode I got good play, even including the title of the series. They didn't need to do that but they did.

My guess is that someday I'll be an old dried up mountainman sitting on a stump lecturing to Jesse who is the star of a new series "Son of Woodsmaster" <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Now it's time for the Woodsmaster poem (Karen hates it).

Ive caught a couple episodes. About the only really useful piece of info I picked up was the prison match, TP with lint from a cotton sock rolled like a joint. lights with a spark. (He is wearing white cotton socks <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/2guns.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':2guns:' /> !)

Good entertainment and has at least sparked some discussions with the wife, getting her motivated.

Ok, sorry I went a little postal I realize it's entertainment. My bitch is this show does show some good information, but he makes it look too easy and I'm afraid some greenhorn who sees this will be a little over confident and end up dead. At least with the Survivor show any moron can tell it's BS, and the Wanted Ted or alive show their goal seems to be to take some pre-packaged people from the city and show them the dirty truth of what it takes to feed them in there insulated city lives (and as always with Ted, to inflate his ego). One other thing I wasn't just giving Ron & Karen lip service, I really have learned a great deal from their videos, and they have been damn entertaining to boot. Alrighty then with that i'll shut up about the subject. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I've watched his show many times and while i am not a complete expert on survival i think it is great. Like you all said it is on tv so it is not going to a be a real in depth instructional movie. This is made to showcase what a survival scenario is 'like'. Not preparing you to go out and live in the wilds for a year just by watching his show. And like some of you said you have learned from him as well, so it is a good show!!

About the crew following him around, even if he did have people following him around he is not getting any help from them, any food, or water and still has to survive for the week.

Why don't you try to live in the wilds for a week every week in a new extreme then let's see how you turn out, if you turn up at all, while still making things interesting to everyone, not just diehard survival nuts.

Check out "Alone in The Wilderness" movie it is another good example.

Actually.. There is more likely a month between shoots and it's more than possible in Hollywoodland that two or more stories are being shot simultaneously. Since the program starts out with what turns out to be a lie by saying he is alone and only has his camera, why should we believe that he actually does anything for a week? It's easy enough to put "Day 2" on any piece of film. I've been part of too many projects to believe any spin.

As far as any of us trying it, I'm sure that after you've been here awhile (that was your 2nd post right?) you'll realize that there a lot of practitioners here who spend not only week after week but month after month doing that sort of thing.

I'm not trying to diminish the guys show or his abilities. As I stated above, I sorta liked it. I know what it takes to make something like this fly. It's a lot of work. Just don't expect any of the pros here to eat this shit and call it granola.
