I usually build a fire -get drunk - pass out - wake up - then go to the tent and go to bed till daylight. Beats staying home although home is good.

Night Time at camp is a good time to reflect on what happened that day or what you plan to do the next.

Write in your journal.

Repair items that you broke during the daytime.

Make new items to improve your camp.

Carve on your walking stick.

Contemplate the meaning of life.

Watch the stars and try to figure out what's really out there.

Go through your pack and rearrange it so that it's more efficient.

Listen to all the strange sounds in the woods at night.

Try to figure out what that strange smell is, and why all the animals suddenly got quiet.

Tell old stories and make up new ones.

Stare at the embers in the fire.

If you leave your camp at night for what every reason, be sure to leave your Pal Light on in the fleshin mode. It will guide you back to camp, and keep you from getting turned around.

Storm: I am SO glad that you also picked up on that. For a minute I thought that I was the only one around here that was a bit warped! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> And I KNEW that just couldn't be the case! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This may sound like a sacralige, but you could take a small radio with you to while the hours away until slumber takes over.

Another thing to keep in mind that if you are very busy all day long, you may just feel the need for sleep and just go to bed after eating.

i've done that a few times and i really loved it. especially when i'm in a remote place, like the aleutian islands. there's something about laying in a still night, under the stars, listening to the overnight coast-to-coast-AM show about aliens and shit...

Sometimes you can pick up stuff like the old radio programs of the Shadow and others. Or there are some new ones like Mystery Theater. Kind of neat stuff to listen to in the dark woods. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Huh' />

I only wish radios worked better in the woods where I go.

getcherself one of them little grundig wind-up shortwave radios...
#27
I may do that some day when it becomes possible for me.

Does being a shortwave help out on the normal AM or FM station reception or is it just a radio with extra band width?

I bought one Louis but I haven't gotten it "out there" as of yet.

Do NOT rely on the light though, it will suck your batteries/charge dry QUICKLY!!!

One of these days I am going to try to replace it with a lower wattage lamp and see if that helps.

Let's see other things to do are:

Leather projects such as sheaths, belts, bags etc..

Sharpen knives.

Practise night land nav.

Bring an astronomy book and view/learn the constellations.

Practise cold weather firemaking skills (AFTER your main fire is lit and going)

Practice making primitive shelters at night.

Drink whisky

Drink bourbon

Make a wooden spoon.

Solve personal life problems/challenges after drinking whisky/bourbon

Develope your "night eyes" and hearing. Seriously, work on it and you will be amazed how much you might be missing.
