Thats the greatest thing I have ever seen!! Ok, maybe not but it was funny!!

Most of the time it's pretty bright at night with the moon light shining off the snow on the high parks. So what else is there to do but shread it up with telemarking <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Also if it's geeting real cold at night and we have enough light we will travel at night and lay up in the day in the sun. This is how it usually goes for us, when we take off on a Friday night for the weekend.

Most of the time we are snowshoeing and x-country skiing up high to get to some open parks for some skiing. We set up a winter camp, dug in tent, and just goof off for the time we have. We always try to find a place we can dig in a fire pit for some evening festivities.

When we aren't skiing or travling Mrs. Seldoms sleeping bag is a right hand zipper and mines a lefty <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />, she sure gets crabby though when you have to crawl out in the middle of the night and that big whoosh of cold comes in.

When I go alone, I like to take a good book.

I like winter camping there is nothing like the quiet of winter mountains <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

I did my first survival trip in winter. The lightly falling snow turned to sleet that second day. It was quite a challenge to stay dry and warm. I didn't like the cold, but loved the trip.

I've been winter camping since, and you just can't beat it for solitude. No tourists or traffic. It's so quiet, you can hear snow hitting the ground. You don't have to worry about a water source if its snowing. You can pack perishables since "the World is my Icebox," and you can carry more gear further by packing it on a sled. Your book, a few arts and crafts, and the stars is all I need.

I did a little write-up on the old forum on the wind-up radios. They no longer make the Radio Shack radio. <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> The closest you can come is Grundig's model (can be found at Radio Shack). I prefered the RS model over the Grundig, and got a second one for my BOB when returning the Grundig. Other models have AM/FM only. I wanted to have SW and WX capability. [edit] I found the same thing as the Radio Shack in the UK: Morphy Richards Radio 27007

Another model worth looking into is "Kaito Solar AM/FM Shortwave Multiband Radio." It is wind-up, solar and battery powered, and at $45, I might need to get one. Kaito Solar Radio

On the LED project, you can ream out a light bulb and replace it with a resistor and LED of your choice. LEDs have different voltages, so you would have to match the LED and resistor to your batteries output. After a little more searching, I think this will give the results you want:

I like this.

The best thing about being out in winter is the quiet cold, with the North Star above your head and the subtle ringing of the heavens at the back of your hearing.

I know I've posted this picture before, but this is one spot I like to go to in the winter time...now, imagine all the ground around it covered in snow and it's a nice clear and dark night....Perfect for soaking all the aches and pains of the days travel away, and contemplating the next days adventures...Somewhere I've got some actual winter pictures, but I'll have to dig for them.

Seriously, I love the cold of the mountains on a quiet winter's night. The stars are so clear and you can hear them sing. Just one of life's many pleasures! And if you haven't guessed by now, I'm ALL into pleasure! <img src='http://www.hoodswoods.net/IVB/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> :pile:

Excellent suggestions all around. I must agree with Kailyst's original suggestion that winter camping is best with a companion, tho. For sharing the fire and the experiences.

All of them.

(PS: I did not realize spanking was enforced around here or I would have joined sooner)

Thank you for the welcomes.

About me:

Like many of you here, I have a warped mind, I am an avid student of survival in all its forms ("student" because one never stops learning if one is smart), I enjoy a good blade, a good fire, a good book, a good hunt (both for meat and for, well... ), good food, hiking and other pursuits of pleasure simple and exotic.

I look forward to learning more from you wild peole now that I have chosen to become one of you.
