Communication is a Survival Skill! So is critical thinking!

When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything—you can't conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him.

For me and mine bugging out is a family affair. Each family member has his/her own AK in 7.62/39. Both CZ-75/85 and the .22 CZ Kadet conversion would go and the S&W 642. Also along for the ride are the Mossberg 500, the 10-22 and my trusty Remington 788 in 308. And of course my .357 Python (if room in the vehicles the Rossi Puma in .357 and others TBD)

Minimal requirements are 2- AK, 10-22, 12 ga, Rem 788, Python, and CZs. We would have fewer calibers, interchangeable parts, and all are tested and trusted old friends.

Each BOB includes a decent fixed blade, an SAK, a multi-tool and either a hatchet or folding saw.

I agree with RCWALLA.

I have a large 6mm deer rifle that I carry while the wife unit would carry a smaller weapon..ie .22 or .223. The kids will carry 20 gauge single barrell breach loading shoot guns...er. shot guns.

Pistols for me and the wife unit in medium calibers.

Followed by all the usual packs, buttpacks, straps, and all that other crap......right into the truck, just as muleskiner said.
People are stupid, they can be made to believe anything either because they are afraid it is true or because the hope that it is. I too can be tricked, but I admit it. I must always weigh what I hear and see and come to the best conclusion possible.

It would break my heart to leave most of my arsenal behind in my safe or cached but if it was a national catastrophe and I reasonably suspected I would have to live off the land and not be coming back, I'd take a good 22 rifle and a 22 handgun, perhaps two, and gobs of ammo.

Why? Because 22 ammo is everywhere for scrounging, from stores large and small, homes, etc. I suspect the bigger stuff would soon become scarce and especially the less popular calibers. Also, as pointed out in a previous post, you can carry a heck of a lot of 22 compared to big bore rifle, pistol, and shotgun ammo. Agree that 22 is not a "bear stopper" but it is adequate for foraging and most self defense situations, especially if you're careful, watch your back trail, and don't blunder into a situation. I won't go into details here but point out that 22, especially shorts are not hard to silence.

Leaving your home burdened down with too much stuff would be a mistake. I might try to cache other firearms, ammo, and excess survival goodies as I proceeded away from the nest but I want to be lightened down and able to move by day two or three at the latest. My big concern is going to be finding an area where I can survive long term. For that you'll need water and food sources, hidden shelters, fuel for occasional fires, and preparing defensive positions. You'll no doubt need the latter because you won't be the only one staking claim to your territory. Your only advantage will be detecting them before they detect you, then taking the necessary countermeasures. By the way, has cannibalism entered anyone's mind when you conjecture about a situation like this? I have thought about that and shuddered but we could all become "wild game" if it's truly a catasrophe and all social structure and order is a thing of the past. Hope it never happens. LASTO

I'd grab my .40 Glock, Win 1200, Ka-Bar, and new BOB (when I get it done up, next week hopefully). For sheer Defensive/destructive power in a SHTF situation, I would also take my ex Mother-in-law...guaranteed to subdue the wild masses.

Go get more amo for the weapons I already have (M16, 870 CG special, sig 40)

grab a 240 out of the armory w/ about, oh I dunno, 2k worth of ammo, and some extra barrels...for the zombies

"borrow" one of the 1 ton trucks from motorpool, a couple spare tires, and weld mount for the 240 in the bed...

grab the nearest Marine, former or active

get 2 cases of beer for the Marine

go reign death and destruction on the way to the fiance's house,

try to melt all the barrels for th 240 on the way back

live off the nice little deer, cows, turkey, quail and other tasty animals that live on this hippie-game preserve of a military installation.

Came in late on this. I'm still building BOBs, so if it hit the fan right NOW I'd be in poop city.

1. To me a bug out is a last resort, and I would do so with the presumption that my home would be looted and burned in our absence, so:

2. I would not go anywhere without my wife or without knowing she is enroute to a safe meet point. She carries a .357 SW Mod 50 5-shot w/ Federal HydroShok Premium loads.

3. I'd grab what BOB stuff I do have, including M1A locked & loaded (hollowpoints), 10 20-round mags (HPs), Springfield XD45 w 5 13-round mags (Federal HydroShok loads), Rem870 w/ 50 rds of 00, Kahr PM9 (pocket carry). Marlin 30-30 for wife, split soads once we meet up.

At this point, and in the case of a bug out, I want one source of long-range knock-the-crap-out-of-something firepower. That's the M1A, zeroed at 300 yards. Aimpoint optics. I thought about a .22, which is still good but that'd mean taking (and packing)nearly the entire armory. Probably take a compound and a dozen graphites. Anything left behind I would bury or destroy. Firepower, first aid, and survival equipment is paramount unless someone can talk me out of it (not likely).

I don't even fantasize about establishing front lines. If it get into a pitched battle I'm likely to lose, which is going to happen sometime anyway. I favor a long shot to eliminate initial (and significant) threat. A 308 will also perform well on engine blocks and stuff like that. Urban solutions for getting out of Dodge.

Ron and Karen are top flight. I trust them. Anyone take counsel from Gabe Suarez @ Suarez international?

actually, i will be serious here for a minute. I'm really not sure i could just "up and go", even though i am ready for that. My best buddy and faithful companion, is this (19lb'er) claws, muscle and wiskers :

I can't exactly take him with me, he is TERRIFIED of the outdoors, noise, being in a truck etc. And i will be honest, there is no way i would leave him to starve. He needs his special high protein, no grain, high meat food. He cant open a can, and i cant leave dry food for sevral days because of his urinary tract problems.

So suffice to say, i would most likely mount one hell of a home defense, cuz lill buddy is my companion and i couldn't leave him to suffer alone. It was bad enough last year when i went away for 5 days. My neighbor who took care of him said he whimpered and mewled for 5 days and was severely depressed and sad because i was'nt around. Seeing as i have more compassion for animals than i do humans, there is no choosing.
