Titanium is pretty interesting..............
"Titanium is the ninth-most abundant element in Earth's crust (0.63% by mass) and the seventh-most abundant metal."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanium
Light weight cutlery is one of the least demanding applications IMO and unlike plastic not normally day glow orange so easier to misplace in long grass ............... there are arguments both ways.
This was true of aluminium in the past........
"The currently known processes for extracting titanium from its various ores are laborious and costly"
As these get scrapped it should get cheaper
"The former Soviet Union developed techniques for making submarines with hulls of titanium alloys forging titanium in huge vacuum tubes."

Hey titanium is not that expensive, only $7:50 to $20 for sheet titanium for a kilo.
These items for outdoor use should be cheaper.
$50 for a 4.5 ounce titanium kettle! It should be cheaper!
It is 35.27 ounces to a kilo.
So it is $2.55 for 4.4 ounces even if they pay top price of $20 a kilo of titanium.
Add on the manufacturing costs and over heads, which for aluminium is about $10, and the price of a titanium kettle should be $12.55.
NOT $50

The CDT passes within a mile of my house. I am planning a trek now. But my ears are not long enough to carry a pack. So I will be riding one mule and packing another.

Ha! Good one... Please take some pics so we can all enjoy the trip, too.
So good to see you around again, my friend... Have you moved to your property in my state yet?

Unlikep plastic, titanium lasts, you can cook wih it, it's non-toxic and because of the price you're probably less likely to lose it.
It's a new generation of long lasting items. It's the wonder metal of our time. Can't be used for everything, but a lot.
I have very few well chosen items and my canteen kit, spork and chopsticks are part of that. Price? I donæt care. I use these things every day Buy once, cry once. See, I don't have a house full of crap I don't use, but I chose after careful consideration to spend some of my hard earned money on these few items.
Actually, aluminium is lighter than titanium, but it's no where near as durable, can't handle heat as well and though some have their doubts about it's toxicity it certainly deteriorates and that stuff is going somewhere.
The reason for prices of certain items is that it's harder to work with.
As for other gear. It depends on the season, where you are and what you want to do.
If it was about status or posing I would list all my gear now. Honestly, I'd rather noone really know what I've got.

I have a theory, and it might be wrong, but I believe that a lot of this super state of the art outdoor equipment is bought to show status.
For instance i was in the lake district in the UK, and a beani (wooly hat) had a North face patch on the front of it - it coat $25.
It was wool i suppose, but I could find another wool one which would cost $7.
So why does the North Face wooly hat sell?
Answer, I think, is that it is a status symbol.
And I think titanium is the same.
I know a Ti cooking pot is lighter than aluminium, but is really worth fours time the price of an aluminium pot to save say - two ounces?

I totally agree with your assessment of the status symbol, Limey Pete. But you are not likely to find the snobs very far off the asphalt & pavement, unless they decided to take their Mercedes Bens or Lexus SUV's a little further that they should have and got them stuck in the mud!

You are correct Pete, to a point.............although on balance I personally have an opposing view.
Lighter - maybe
Cheaper - yes
Disposable - yes
More durable - probably not
Heat resistant - Ti wins (or Al)
Toxicity - the jury is still out / but minimal risk
Versatility - multi use - Ti wins
Non stick cookware friendly - plastic wins
Of course , not all plastics are created equal

Very true, but there is some plastic dinnerware which is virtually un-breakable. Extremely tough to say the least, and not that much more expensive over the easily breakable stuff.
We got rid of all our aluminum cookware, just as a precaution, and avoid any packaged products in aluminum also, unless there is no alternative, which is rare.

Titanium is too quirky for me. The bottom keeps rounding out from the heat. If ounces count that much its OK but I won't be replacing my lost Titanium 1 liter BOT.
As to hiking the long trails, except for the rugged Benton Mckaye trail, its a social experience with a lot of loneliness thrown in. I almost did the AT. Now I'm glad I did not. Its a test in going lightweight for sure, but not your typical backpacking experience.
